Ανω Καστανιά

Ovens

When you walk through the settlement, we can see a large number of bread ovens. Almost every one in two houses has, a more or less preserved, one. Most of them are closed and not used anymore. They are often located at the back of the houses and can be accessed from the terrace by a few steps or by a dirt path.

They are almost all built in the same way, following a well-defined model. They have a stone base, a clay and tile vault, a triangular opening made of two or three large pieces of slate or stone. A mixture of earth and stones is above the vault  which allows it to be loaded while accumulating heat. Finally, on the top, there is a reinforced concrete roof. All ovens are often covered with a lime or concrete facing.
